A Walk for Cystic Fibrosis
Bowness-on-Solway: looking west to Criffel, Scotland, 5th April 2007
First of all, I have no family connection with Cystic Fibrosis. My connection with Cystic Fibrosis was originally through a friend whose wife is a sufferer and now through my dearest friend who is both a carrier of CF and a very hardworking patron of the CF Trust.
Back in March 1996, they were part of an organising committee for a fund-raising vintage car rally over the Lakeland Passes and I offered to go to help as back up. It was quite interesting towing a Morris 8 over the top of Hardknott Pass!
For the last two years I have attended the FunDay in aid of Cystic Fibrosis held at Haworth in conjunction with The Railway Children Walks. Jenny Agutter, much loved actress and star of three versions of The Railway Children is a carrier of CF and a hardworking patron of the CF Trust.
Introduction
While we were stopped at Oakworth Station on last year's walk, I was able to get a gorgeous shot of Jenny from across the level crossing and when the walk continued I suddenly found myself alone with her - few men would be stupid enough to waste that opportunity. We were able to have a long chat about several things and, naturally, CF was high on the list. I'd been intending to do a long walk this year and it struck me that it would be far better to have a definite purpose in mind and try to do something to help others - so what better than a walk in aid of CF? I mentioned it to Jenny and she was happy to support it as it also tied in with the "Great Strides" campaign that CF Trust was planning and also something she was considering.
